Drugs and alcohol can make you happy. So can sex. And if you're having cocaine-fueled sex on a regular basis, I'd say you're pretty successful and I'm sure you'd say you're pretty happy. But there's a big problem with using drugs as a means to happiness: it gets very expensive. Before you know it, you’re broke and you have to get a second job just to pay for all the yeyo. But then you’re so exhausted from working two shitty jobs you need more cola just to keep going. Now you’re broke and miserable. So you try to quit the jobs and the blow but thankfully this is where addiction helps out and you DON’T QUIT! Instead, you turn to a life of crime to pay for the sleigh ride. But pulling gas stations stick-up jobs at three in the morning is hardly an indicator of success and you're really unhappy with the hours.

Excerpt from the forthcoming book Don’t Quit! Just Don’t Try So Hard.

a message from the author (me)...

I had it all, a great job that paid well, excellent benefits, a new wife, my health, and even a new cat. I was successful, happy, and in love. And then, within a year, it all came crashing down.

My wife asked for a divorce, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor, I was laid off, and my cat died. My success, happiness, and love had been precariously built on the definitions and consent of others. (SPOILER ALERT! That's why it was all so easy to lose.)

At age 56, having spent nearly a decade building what I'd just lost, the thought of starting all over exhausted me. I wasn't one of those super-achievers who "take it to the next level" and "crush it 24/7." I was over 50 and over it.

But once I unabashedly embraced my prosaic nature, my new life path crystallized: I would rebuild my success, happiness, and yes, even love, upon the unbridled power of mediocrity.

My book, Don't Quit! Just Don't Try So Hard is my how-to manual on how-not-to. In it, I share with you...

  • The Three Epiphanies to my personal and spiritual awakening. (Okay, that's a bit much. They just led me to define success, happiness, and love on my terms.)

  • The 5 or 6 Destructive Thoughts forestalling success, happiness, and love.

  • The 5 Keys to Living an Adequate Life including Lowering your expectationsAiming for the Middle, and Embracing Complacency.

It's an E-Z read, and an even E-Zer to-do. No goal-setting. No incessant journaling. No getting up two hours earlier every day for that "next level mindset." (What mindset can anyone have at 5 a.m except that they're f*cking zonked?)

So, what do you say? Are you willing to do less than it takes to create a life that’s good enough? If you're amenable to committing, oh, I dunno, say 60 or 70%, Don't Quit! Just Don't Try So Hard can probably bring you all the success, happiness, and yes, even love, you can handle.

You have a rendezvous with mediocrity!
